Historical notes : Legend has it that Ascanius, landing at Lavinio togeth-er with Aeneas, founded the city of Alba Longa on the western rim of an ancient volcanic crater, the present-day Lake of Albano. Five centuries of great splendour were followed by a phase of destruction and then by a new lease of life, with the construction of sumptuous villas and resi-dences in a beautiful setting blessed with a mild cli-mate. After the Dark Ages, the Genoa-based Gandolfi family, and later the Savelli family, built on the land, constructing the palace that was later purchased by the Apostolic Chamber in 1596, after which it became the Pope's summer residence. In the environs of Castelgandolfo castle, the site of an ancient volcanic crater (whose lake had been dried in Roman times to create a water supply network formed by underground tunnels and pipes that are still in work-ing order) was chosen by course designer Robert Trent Jones as the venue for a splendid 18-hole course. The famous golfer and course architect, respecting the lie of the crater hollow, placed the fairways between centuries-old Mediterranean olives and pines, cypress trees, mimosa and rose bushes. The villa that Flavio Chigi, the Cardinal of Sassia, built for a well-known "fair maiden" called "La Pavona", the current name of the locality where the Golf Club is situated, was turned into the Clubhouse.

Vom Clubhouse des Country Club Castelgandolfo hat man eine bezaubernde Sicht auf den Golfplatz. Es wurde aus einem prächtigen Gebäude des 18. Jahrhunderts renoviert. Der Blick schweift über einen grünschimmernden Vulkankrater, der mit der Phantasie eines Experten, dem Amerikaner Robert Trent Jones, in einen beanspruchenden und technischen Parcours verwandelt wurde. Das dafür geeignete Gelände wurde mit Bunkern, kleinen Seen, Kunsthindernissen und weiteren Falten bereichert. Hinzu kommen jahrhundertalte Olivenbäume, Eichen und Strandkiefer; als Rahmen dienen die Weinberge der Castelli Romani. Die Streckenführung ist spannend und steckt voller Überraschungen, auch für erfahrene Spieler und Profis, die sich während der internationalen Wettspiele auf diesem Platz treffen.	Cenni storici : Secondo la leggenda Ascanio, sbarcato a Lavinio insieme ad Enea, fondò la città di Alba Longa sul ciglio occidentale di un antico cratere vulcanico, quello che oggi è il lago di Albano. Cinque secoli di grande splendore sono poi seguiti da distruzioni e, in seguito, da una nuova vita , fatta di grandi ville e dimore sontuose, grazie al suo clima mite ed al bellissimo paesaggio. Superato il perio-do buio del Medioevo, la famiglia genovese dei Gandolfi e di seguito i Savelli, anticipano l'aquisizione delle terre e del castello da parte della Camera Apostolica, nel 1596 , destina-to a residenza estiva del Papato. Nelle vicinanze della rocca di Castelgandolfo, in un antico cra-tere vulcanico, nel cui interno si era creato un lago prosciu-gato in epoca romana da una rete di cunicoli e condutture ancora in funzione, Robert Trent Jones ha disegnato lo splen-dido percorso di 18 buche. L'architetto, rispettando la conca del cratere, ha modellato i fairways tra olivi e pini mediterranei centenari, cipressi, mimo-se e roseti. La Club House è stata ricavata dalla villa che Flavio Chigi, Cardinale di Sassia, aveva fatto costruire per ospitare una nota "beltà" chiamata "la Pavona", nome attua-le della frazione dove è dislocato il circolo di golf. Il Percorso : Già stazionando sul tee della buca i si ha , in un sol colpo d'occhio, la visione panoramica dell'intero per-corso e delle difficoltà che il golfista dovrà superare. La buca 4 è la più difficile del percorso perché sia l'ar-rivo del drive che il colpo al green hanno ostacoli d'ac-qua da entrambi i lati. Se alla 13 la lunghezza e il solito vento contrario ne fanno una buca ostica, alla 14 bisogna rinunciare al drive. La buca seguente ha il lago che, rientrando in più punti, delimita un par 5 insi-diosissimo che richiede colpi molto precisi. La 18, in salita, conclude il percorso presentando un green pieno di pendenze.
The course : The player, standing on the first tee, is immediately con-fronted with a panoramic view of the whole course and of the difficulties lying ahead. The 4th is the hardest hole on the course, with the drive and approach to the green threatened by water hazards along both sides. The length of hole 13 and the wind usually blowing against make this hole a daunting prospect. And there is no room for careless drives on the next hole. On the 15th, the encroaching lake reduces the fairway width at several points to make for a very tough par 5, requiring the utmost accuracy. The final hole, uphill, has a green full of testing slopes.
